FIFA 18 On Switch Will Run At 60fps In Both Docked & Handheld Modes

28 Comments on FIFA 18 On Switch Will Run At 60fps In Both Docked & Handheld Modes
We already know that FIFA 18 on Nintendo Switch will differ slightly from the Xbox One and Playstation 4 versions. For starters, the game won’t be utilising the Frostbite engine but rather it’s own custom-made engine specifically designed for Switch. The title, however, is shaping up great and is sure to please fans of FIFA as FIFA 18 has been confirmed to run at 60fps in both handheld and docked modes. The game will be output at 1080p on the big screen and at 720p when it’s in your hands or used in tabletop mode.

The news comes from supervising producer Andrei Lazarescu at Gamescom in Germany this week:

We spent a lot of time actually understanding what the console is. In dock, what we’re seeing right now, for example, is 1080p run running at 60 frames per second. When you plug out and you play in handheld it’s 720p. We spent a lot of time making sure that transition happens seamlessly and you still get 60 frames per second.

Everything missing from the Switch version of FIFA 18

FIFA 18 is the series’ first entry on Switch, and the first game in the franchise to hit a Nintendo system in quite a few years. On the whole, it contains many of the same features as other platforms, but some key elements are missing.

We do know that The Journey is missing from the Switch version of FIFA 18. The story mode won’t be present, seemingly due to how tied it is to Frostbite. Rather than using that engine on Switch, Nintendo’s console incorporates custom technology.

USgamer also put together a nice piece outlining other missing Switch features that you may not have been aware of. Here’s what the site shares:

Squad Battles and Weekend League: One of the newer features in FIFA 18 is Squad Battles—a rotating set of games in FIFA Ultimate Team where you can earn points and climb up a leaderboard for major rewards. Sadly, Squad Battles doesn’t make the cut in the Switch version, and neither does Weekend League—a popular mode in which you win games to qualify for a weekend tournament with major prizes. What does make it? Squad Building Challenges and Daily Objectives are both still available, as are the Single Player and Online Drafts. Losing Weekend League and Squad Battles is a serious drag, though. It makes Ultimate Team, which was dicey to begin with on the Switch, an almost total non-starter.

The Presentation: FIFA 18 on the Switch rolls back all the really nice additions to the presentation found in the other version, including the league-specific overlays for MLS, enhanced crowds, and improved celebrations. The crowd audio also regresses back to the more generic songs for MLS games (though you can still hear the “Gala-xy!” chants at Galaxy home games). Basically, the presentation is about where it was with FIFA 16.

Transfer Negotiations and Release Clauses in Career Mode: This is a bit of a bummer: release clauses and sell-on clauses are missing from career mode. So are the owner mode-like financials introduced in FIFA 17, though they were kind of superfluous anyway. As you might expect, Transfer Negotiations are also back to being conducted via email rather than via cutscene as they are in the other versions. This is a loss, but I’m more disappointed that I can’t trigger Messi’s release clause and start some serious trouble.

Certain Formations: Certain formations that are prevalent in FIFA Ultimate Team are unavailable in the other modes in the Switch version. That includes 4-1-2-1-2, which happens to be my favorite formation. What gives, EA?

Another weird thing: Tactical instructions are hidden beyond a “Customize Formation” option rather than getting their own tab. For a second, I totally thought that I couldn’t tell my Strikers to “Get in Behind.” I eventually found it, though. It was just very well-hidden.

Switch Version of FIFA 18 has Outsold the PS4 Version in Japan

With the PS4 having a much larger install base than the Switch, you’d any given game to sell better on Sony’s platform. Even so, there have been a few cases where the Switch has gained the upper hand in multiplatform sales, and now there’s yet another one to add to the list.

According to sales numbers collected by Japanese publication Dengeki Online, EA’s FIFA 18 on Switch outsold the PS4 version by 1.5 times. The breakdown is that lifetime sales for the Switch version are currently at 117,669 copies, while the PS4 version is sitting at 77,892 copies. This shows that the game’s install base on Switch is larger by 39,777 copies.

This case is particularly interesting not just because the PS4’s install base is larger, but also because the PS4 version of FIFA 18 has more features than the Switch counterpart. Despite it being simpler, it looks like Japanese players prefer the Switch version of the game, more than likely due to it having the ability to be taken on the go.

EA has announced that Switch owners of FIFA 18 will be getting the World Cup 2018 content for free, just like other platforms.

The World Cut 2018 content includes all 32 participating teams, all of the stadiums, kits, and much more. The new update will be released on May 29.

Here’s what EA said in a statement regarding the free update:

“The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia update lets players choose one of 32 qualified nations to live out their FIFA World Cup dream and write their own history from the group stage to the final in Moscow in Online Friendlies and Online Tournament modes.

Dive into Custom Tournament mode to select any licensed national team in FIFA 18 to create a unique tournament draw with non-qualified nations, including Italy, Chile, USA, among others. Additionally, experience the authentic stadium atmospheres in a quick Kick-Off experience, either solo or with friends.

Feel the excitement on and off the pitch through official FIFA World Cup elements, from immersive atmospheres that include all 12 stadiums from Russia to authentic pitch environments, and national team banners.

Jump into FIFA World Cup Ultimate Team and benefit from a revised chemistry system featuring dynamic player items related to the real-world tournament to build a dream international squad. Also featured in FIFA World Cup Ultimate Team are FIFA World Cup ICONS, some of the most iconic players from the tournament’s history.”
