Reggie confirms Nintendo Switch Online is Virtual Console’s successor

Nintendo fans have been clamoring for the Virtual Console — or its equivalent — on the Switch ever since its release last year. Well folks, it finally looks like we have an official answer, and it comes directly from Reggie Fils-Aimé himself!

As many people have already guessed, the launch of Nintendo Switch Online this September will bring the highly anticipated dream of playing Nintendo classics to life for owners of the system. In an interview with IGN, Reggie stated the following:

“The Virtual Console successor is Nintendo Switch Online, right? With the mentality that says we’re going to be offering a slate of games, and it’s a slate that’s going to increase over time,” Fils-Aime said. “For many of these games, there’s going to be additional online capability provided in those games. That’s the vision we have for how to best bring our legacy content to Nintendo Switch.”

Offering a library of NES titles, with 20 immediately available at launch, the online service plans to add more in the future. While we don’t yet know how often titles will be added, we do have a little insight about a handful of games that will be included in the launch lineup. You can expect to see these familiar titles for sure: Soccer, Tennis, Donkey Kong, Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, Dr. Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Super Mario Bros. 3.

Needless to say, it’ll be interesting to see what additional online capability will bring to such beloved classics. Make sure to stay wired, as we’ll be updating you with even more information about the online service as soon as it becomes available.

:ugly:

Apropos VC:

Das! Ich will das!

Letzteres. Definitiv letzteres.
Denn Nintendos Systeme können so gut oder schlecht laufen wie sie wollen, die offizielle Emulation alter Spiele wird trotzdem immer bestenfalls stiefmütterlich von denen angegangen. :upeinlich:

Apropos VC:
[Ein gut emuliertes Mario Galaxy]
Das! Ich will das!
Das! Ich will das für Metroid Prime 1 und 2!

Reggie Says Nintendo Switch Online Will Connect You To Legacy Content "In A Meaningful Way"

"We know that Nintendo has a deep and rich library"

The Nintendo Switch Online service launches this September, but beyond a few basic details, we know very little about it.

Keen for answers, Waypoint spoke with Reggie Fils-Aime recently and quizzed him on the finer points of the service. For example, what benefit will Switch owners see when they subscribe later this year, over what they already have for free?

You will get the ability to cloud save your content. And so for those consumers that are concerned about saves, you know, we've now provided a method to address that.

Secondly, you're going to get access to some legacy content. And we've said that we're going to start with 20 games that are going to be available. We've outlined the first 10. And so that's the other benefit that you're going to get as part of Nintendo Switch Online.

What I would say is that we've got a number of months until the service launches. We'll continue to provide detail as we go. Right now the message is that it's launching in September. Fundamentally there are three elements to the service: connected play, the cloud saves, and the legacy content. We're going to continue providing more details as we get.

The death of the Virtual Console has led many to question exactly how Nintendo is going to handle legacy content via Nintendo Switch Online; could it adopt a similar approach to Sony and Microsoft, who - via their PlayStation Plus and Game Pass services - grant access to a wide library of both classic and modern games? Reggie wouldn't comment on what competitors are doing when asked by Waypoint, but did say this:

What I would tell you is that we know that Nintendo has a deep and rich library. We know that consumers enjoy playing those legacy games. And we also know that we've done a lot in making that content available. Whether it's the work we've done on past platforms, whether it's what we've done with micro-consoles in the NES Classic and SNES classic.

For us, it's really about being thoughtful around what's the best way to enable consumers to have access to this content and to do it in a meaningful way. We think the work that we're doing with the Nintendo Switch Online is one way to address that opportunity.

We'll no doubt hear more about Nintendo Switch Online as September approaches, but what are your feelings on the service currently? Will online play, cloud saves and a few NES games be enough to tempt you to part with your cash, or are you expecting something a little grander - perhaps something along the lines of PS+, where free Switch games are offered up each month, as well as retro titles? Let us know with a comment.

Nintendo Still Has More To Share On Switch Online Before Launch

Nintendo’s upcoming paid online service has been a much talked about topic for the last year, as fans have speculated over what kind of value it will offer and whether Nintendo will finally get online ‘right’ this time. The company has revealed most of the features that will be included, with cloud saves, online play, and a virtual console-like service, but a recent comment from Nintendo’s president seems to indicate that there may yet be more to it.

Tatsumi Kimishima addressed the topic in the latest financial results briefing, and alluded to the fact that the company has a “little more” to talk about that hasn’t been revealed yet. Here’s what was said:

We should be able to give you a little more information as we get closer to the official launch in September. Our aim is to provide consumers with variety of ways to play and the ability to use the system in a more convenient way. I will have to ask for your patience until we are ready to discuss any further details.

Perhaps he’s referring to a system update that’ll add an internet browser and themes, or maybe the remaining ten launch games for the virtual console service will be shown off? Only time will tell.
