GoldenEye: Playing the Wii Way
That's right, we finally wrap our mitts around the Wii Remote and nunchuk this time. And we like it.
It's all coming together. Finally. Activision's been strategically spreading out the exposure to its upcoming GoldenEye reimagining, spacing out what we see and what we play almost to the point of frustration. But earlier this week, it happened: the company swung by the offices with a fresh – possibly finished – build of GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo Wii and handed me the controller. And not just any controller: a Wii remote and Nunchuk.
Yes, I finally got to play GoldenEye with pointer support. That might not sound like a big deal to you, but after nearly a half-dozen officially sanctioned hands-on events for the game with the Classic Controller Pro (an admittedly excellent way of playing GoldenEye) it's a huge victory to get a chance to aim and shoot with the stock controller option.
The verdict? This is the way I'll be playing GoldenEye when I sit down with the game for the official review.
It's up for debate which way is the best way of playing a first-person shooter, either through dual-analog means or an analog/pointer hybrid that mimicks the "mouselook" of a PC FPS. There are two separate camps over the issue and I don't think any one game is going to pull one side to the others' camp. But I'll give full disclosure: I at least believe that the Wii remote/nunchuk has the potential to trump any dual analog set-up thanks to its ability to offer precise aiming. Very few games have really shown this off, though: The Conduit, while a hit or miss FPS on Wii, has controller customization options out the wazoo and with them it's possible to really tweak a tight shooter experience on Wii.
While I only had a few minutes to plow through two different levels in single player GoldenEye, the game's "Experienced" setting on the Wii Remote/Nunchuk was plenty for me to stick with the configuration and not resort to any customizations. It was tight and responsive, something that's oh so important for the genre especially when you're going to take everything you've learned and apply it to the extensive multiplayer.
And the Wii Remote/Nunchuk configuration even offers up a function that won't be mapped to the Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro. Get this: when crouched behind cover and holding the button that tightens your view down your weapon's scope, if you slowly twist the Nunchuk you'll turn your viewpoint in the direction you're twisting. It's a great way to quickly peek out of cover, pop off a few shots, and get back behind. The twist is fully analog and based on the nunchuk's accelerometer, so a slight twist will register a slight head tilt.
The single player action is at this point, an incredibly satisfying FPS experience and anyone sticking to their "They're ruining GoldenEye with a remake!!!" needs to pull their nostalgia glasses off and stomp them to the ground. Sure, remaking an incredibly popular brand is a way for a company to make a bigger buck than creating an original experience, but you know what? This is an original experience. Eurocom has gone all out to produce a fresh first-person shooter that retains a recognizable spirit. Wait until you see some of the things the team has pulled off in the single player mode: the storytelling and acting is engaging and the environments – like the rain-covered Dam or the snowy cliffs of Siberia – are absolutely gorgeous even if they're not in HD.
Don't believe me? Hit the video pages to see some of the direct feed clips we captured during our hands-on earlier this week. Now if only Activision didn't cut off my demo just as the Bond Introduction Theme was about to play...
Watch for more on GoldenEye 007 as we lead into the game's November 2nd release.

IGN RATINGS FOR GOLDENEYE 007 (WII)
9.5 Presentation
Brilliant acting and motion capturing, and a fantastic retelling of a familiar Bond story. Boot up the original N64 game if you're a purist: this is for people who want something new.
8.5 Graphics
The game looks great with awesome atmosphere, but watch out for the drop in framerate during the hectic fights.
9.0 Sound
Excellent soundtrack even if it's not as memorable as the classic tunes. Voice acting is professional and the gunfire top-notch.
9.0 Gameplay
The game lifts its foundation from other successful first person shooters. It's excellent alone or with friends.
9.0 Lasting Appeal
The single-player can be taken care of in a few hours -- with unlockable difficulties. You'll be playing this one even longer thanks to off- and online multiplayer.

Re: [Wii] GoldenEye

...hat irgendwer anders was ähnliches beobachtet?
